Shi Jing, The Book of Odes: Lessons from the States, Odes of Qi

 Some notes:

* Every week I search the poems' English results to see if I can find any scholarship or neat bits and pop the results in Resources. Here is this week's collection

* I believe the reminder emails have stopped, so I'll seek a new service to run that. I forgot to get to it this week--will make a note.

When the second batch of these is up and running, if you would like not to be on the list and there isn't an unsubscribe option in the email itself, please just respond 'unsubscribe' or something and I'll take you off the reminder roster.

* IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS WHO MIGHT LIKE TO JOIN or have other ideas, please let me know on
this post.

* If you haven't read it yet, chapter one, on tetrasyllabic shi poetry, in
How to Read Chinese Poetry is hugely useful for the Book of Odes, imo.

**NEXT BATCH FEB 8.**

Baike: this mocks Qi Xiang gong's (https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E9%BD%90%E8%A5%84%E5%85%AC/3485570) shameless behavior and Lu Huan gong's cowardliness, and holds in contempt Qi Xiang gong and his (half) sister, Wen Jiang.

Lu Huan gong and Wen Jiang were married, but then Wen Jiang had an affair with her brother, Qi Xiang gong. The Qi state was more powerful, so Lu Huan gong didn't dare say anything. In 694 BC, Lu Huan gong went to Qi state, and his wife asked to go with him. Wen Jiang and Qi Xiang gong took the opportunity to meet. When Lu Huan gong discovered this and rebuked Wen Jiang, she complained to her brother. Then, Qi Xiang gong hosted a banquet to honor Lu Huan gong, got him drunk, and then had him strangled on the way home. Everyone in the Qi state was ashamed, and this poem was written in rebuke.

The first two stanzas rebuke Wen Jiang for returning to Qi; the last two mock Lu Huan gong.

The fox is a metaphor for Qi Xiang gong. It describes the fox's desire for a partner (i.e. Qi Xiang gong's desire for Wen Jiang).

The pairing of the shoes and caps to show that everyone in the world has a clear spouse.

The condemnation of Lu Huan gong is based on how he allows her to go about disregarding proper etiquette. The Xing technique is used.
