Shi Jing, The Book of Odes: Lessons from the states, Odes Of Bei
This is a longer chapter than the previous two, and people are still catching up with the last two chapters/acclimating to the format. Thus we'll only do one chapter this week.
I'm going to post this week's poem translations in the body of the discussion to make commenting a bit easier.
Get your 'odes of bae' jokes out early, before the rush.

Re: 31. 擊鼓 - Ji Gu
On 土國城漕 (Those do the fieldwork in the State, or fortify Cao, from the Legge translation)
Baidu says: 土:挖土筑城。国:城郭。城:修城。漕(cáo):城墙外的护城河。一说卫国城邑,在今河南滑县境。
土: digging dirt to fortify walls [this char means dirt]
国: city walls [this char usually means country]
城: repair the city walls [this char... usually means city walls or city sdfjslk baidu why]
漕: moat outside the city walls. One source says this is the cities of the state of Wei (vassal of Zhou) in modern Huaxian county, Henan
The baidu vernacular translation of this line is 有的修路筑城墙, which is like, "some build roads and walls"
BUT THEN! In the expansion of details, Baidu says: 诗的第三句言“土国城漕”者,《鄘风·定之方中》毛诗序云:“卫为狄所灭,东徙渡河,野居漕邑,齐桓公攘夷狄而封之。文公徙居楚丘,始建城市而营宫室。”文公营楚丘,这就是诗所谓“土国”,到了穆公,又为漕邑筑城,故诗又曰“城漕”。“土国城漕”虽然也是劳役,犹在国境以内,南行救陈,其艰苦则更甚。
Here my translation is much more shaky bc it's more literary, if anyone has input, would appreciate!!
Regarding the third line of the poem "土国城漕”, [this source says] Barbarians conquered Wei [vassal of Zhou], so Wei moved east and crossed the river, living feral in the canal city (Cao city); Duke Huan of Qi repelled the barbarians and granted it to Wei. Wengong changed residences to Chuqiu and built a city and palace. The Wengong managed Chuqiu is the poem's 土国; finally, after Mugong, the canal city (Cao city) was also fortified, so the poem also says 城漕. Even though 土国城漕 is forced labor and near the country's borders, traveling south to save Chen was more arduous.
Baidu describes Chen and Song as: 陈,春秋诸侯国,帝舜之后,都城在今河南淮阳。与,于。宋,春秋诸侯国,为殷商遗民国家,都城在今河南商丘。
Chen: a vassal state during the Spring and Autumn Period. After the Emperor Shun, its capital was in modern day Huaiyang, Henan
Song: a vassal state during the Spring and Autumn Period. The loyalists of the former Yin Shang dynasty (the dynasty name for the end of the Shang dynasty). The capital was in Shangqiu, Henan.
Sun Zizhong's baidu entry is v short https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E5%85%AC%E5%AD%99%E6%96%87%E4%BB%B2 and I couldn't find anything more in English with any pinyin combo of his names that I tried...
