I sort of got the impression that Xiang Lu felt he/she was pressured into some sort of betrothal but wasn’t having any of it. Strong sense of self assertion and refusal to conform to accepted rules/expectations/rituals. Repetition of trials is interesting. Does it mean the same as it would to an English reader? The sparrow and rat invade the poet’s personal space . Be interested to know what they represent.
