This type of reading is all about the Mao School (not That Mao, another Mao), where it's basically Scholasticism, but for Confucianism. These poems were sometimes ritual instructions/attachments and got passed down *with* core Confucian texts, so a lot of scholars thought they HAD to be read as hyper-official commentary on public events, not Poems About Getting Laid. So from an interpretation POV, we now think--they were probably wrong, it's about Getting Laid. From a historical POV, there's a lot of interesting thinking/work/arguments involving the hyper political readings, tho, so it's not like they're fully discardable? It's useful in terms of figuring out how someone is using a poem in a given time period.
