Southern wood is artemisia used in Chinese medicine to treat fever and malaria and the name derives from Artemis, huntress and moon goddess. Artemis is both Hunter and healer of women (especially in childbirth) so I wonder if there is word play here - the hunting of a medicinal herb - or even if this is a poem about the rising moon and its influence. Many herbs are considered more efficacious if collected during moonlight.
