Ancient Greece used to have ritual funeral games. Maybe this is a kind of similar practice, and an archery competition persists as a good Thing to Do to open a formal ceremony or banquet. Maybe the CQL conference-opening archery competition is partaking in the long comet tail of the aesthetics or habitude of this.
